Batman: The Telltale Series

I have just gotten through Batman: The Telltale Series, and I got it with the PS Plus monthly games. Also thought I’d mention that this is my first Telltale game, so this is all new to me. Anyway, onto the review.

The first thing to mention is the graphics, I have seen screenshots of various telltale games and this game seems to look the same as the previous games. No progression or improvements from The Wolf Among Us that I can see, and considering that the game came out on PS3, this is disappointing.

On the technical side, there are a few bugs and glitches. Mainly it is animation occasionally doing random stuff and looking inhuman. A few times the texture fails and the shadows can follow you creating a black square that you can’t see through. Though in all honesty, these issues don’t appear often and runs better than a lot of other games launch day (Yes, Assassins Creed Unity, always you).

In terms of playing the game, the majority of it is Quick Time Events (QTE). See a cutscene, always be ready to follow onscreen prompts, the only real control you get is in the Batcave or doing detective work.

These are the kind of choices which determines what Batman you are.

Now for the all important story, and Telltale really flex their muscle here. The story is absolutely gripping, always egging you on to the next scene so you can unravel the mystery. The characters are superb and Two Face in particular is a real treat to see develop. The big sexy hook for me is that I can develop Batman to be the one I expect him to be. I went with every non-violent approach as I could, more World’s Greatest Detective than Dark Knight knocking heads together. Although I could see the temptation in every decision where you wonder if the violent approach would get your answers quicker, the other character will react to not just what you say but how you behave. So a story that pressures the character if your really Bruce Wayne or Batman.

Watching this character develop from Harvey Dent to Two-Face is the best plots in this game.

My conclusion is that although the actual graphics need updating and the game in mainly QTE’s, the story is strong enough to make this game really enjoyable. Definitely worth your time to play.

Hints and Tips to help your Dark Knight:

  • When your in the Batcave, do all the extra reading. These pieces constantly update and sum up the choices you’ve made.
  • Try and make good links first time in Detective mode, it gives you an enormous amount of satisfaction.
  • Don’t relax during cutscenes, the game can prompt you with an on-screen command at any point.
  • During QTE fights, don’t panic, you’re given plenty of time to win this thing.
