Chasing Platinum

Greetings and hello everyone, I think it’s been awhile but I have a load of drafts but just can’t really finish them. Hopefully the drafts should be completed over the coming weeks.

Anyway rather than a specific game I have decided to write about the Platinum trophy, as I am on the verge of truly earning one. I thought about this as I am one trophy away from earning a Platinum on Spider-Man PS4 and it got me thinking about trophies. I technically have a platinum trophy already but because it is a Telltale game, you get it just for finishing their games, I’m not counting that one. Actually earning a trophy is something I have not done since they were released with the Playstation 3.

Trophies coming to games had a major influence on the gaming industry in my opinion. It brought out the completionists, the perfectionists, the trophy hunter, which was a new breed of gamer as beforehand we had nothing to compete with except couch co-op games. It also influenced writing about the games, where magazines and online articles would write about how to collect the trophies and what trophies tell you about the game. Even video game marketing was affected, with some games announce their trophy list to give people an idea on what you can do in the game. So this was a major shift in many facets of the video game industry.

I myself, never achieved a single trophy on the Playstation 3. The closest I got was Assassin’s Creed 2, where I had to wear an Auditore cape in every city. I did try but I wasn’t enthusiastic and ultimately gave up. Beyond that, I never had a big interest in chasing trophies, though collecting trophies in Japanese games is an exercise in insanity.

This Spider-Man game does make me feel like that I can get the platinum and as it is so fun to play, I am happy to work towards it. I wonder if players like me prefer an easier platinum trophy or if they prefer a platinum trophy that requires thousands of hours? Something to ponder.
