InFamous: Second Son

Howdy people’s, hope your all doing well. I’m taking a break from mowing the lawn and fawning over the new Spiderman game at E3 to regale you with a review for the last InFamous game that is out.

I bought this game as it was a showpiece game that displayed the power of the PS4 back when it was a new console. I bought it at a cut price and quickly dived in.

Ooooo shiny…

The game quickly eases you in with a tutorial to gain control over your parkour and mobility. Due to story reasons, your then quickly introduced to your powers, smoke powers. This allows you to similar offensive capabilities as Cole’s lightning but in terms of exploration it is really a step up.

This was mightily impressive when it came out.

Graphically the game is an excellent flagship for the Ps4 when it came out. Colours are vibrant, character designs are good quality and the effects are amazing. Between smoke, neon, video and concrete the effects are distinctive and colourful.

The story is very x-men, where there are normals and conduits. An agency (Department of Unified Protection) enforces the persecution of conduits, bizarrely your antagonist (Brooke Augustine) is a conduit helping the government. Unfortunately this is extrapolated too late in the game for any significance. Anyway, your Delsin Rowe, a conduit who gains powers after the D. U. P invade his home, a native American reserve. Between his law enforcement brother and a vigilante neon girl, the characters to meet provide insight into how you use your powers.

Kinda reminds me of a hipster Kratos here.

Following that train of thought, like it’s predecessors, morality is a key mechanic that affects your powers and how people react to you. Your supporting characters will give you advice but really it boils down to accuracy or area of effect powers. Gameplay is very much previous InFamous, with a bit extra. The major improvement isn’t fighting but mobility has been majorly revamped, each power gives you a change of vertical transport. By that I mean whether it’s zooming up, floating up or launching up.

Special note to the neon power, which made me feel like a genuine superpowered person and convinced me that the Ps4 was worth buying. Just zipping up buildings is a wonderful pastime.

Neon power! Feel the full might of the nightclub!

My one real negative is that the antagonist had a real sympathetic motivation and I feel they could have utilised that better throughout the game rather than jam it into the end. Also Spoiler getting concrete powers at the final fight seems kind of pointless to me.

Worth a look at if you’re looking for a superhero fix but this is more like an upgrade rather than an evolution.

Hints and tips to smoke this game:

  • Try and keep moving. Fighting will make up a lot of this game and although you heal quickly it feels like your made of glass. Move constantly and heal when needed.
  • When it comes to powers you’ll be getting new ones but to change them you have to absorb their element. Smoke for smoke, neon signs for neon, TVs for video. This will heal you up.
  • Following that, get comfortable with your powers and be prepared to switch when health is low. No supply for your favourite power, then there will be a source for your other power. Don’t die because you can’t adapt. Heal up and switch powers.
  • When it comes to leveling up, I’d start by grinding the quick absorb as this reduces the time you stand around for target practice.
  • Stealth is not really mentioned but you can whittle down enemy numbers with precision and planning. Take any advantage, there’s more of them anyway so even the odds!
  • When it comes to reclaiming Districts, wait until you’ve got a few ways to kick ass. Smoke grenades are fun but they ain’t taking down helicopters quickly. Grind and play the story a little, then wage your guerilla war. Down with the government!
  • Absolutely use neon to get up buildings if you want to feel like a hipster Flash.
